Chapter 2: Visions of Fancy
As Miss Musumeno headed toward home, passers-by eyed the myth teacher warily. Those that walked these streets everyday knew to avoid her when she approached. She had a tendency to bump into people as she read while walking.
When she reached her apartment building, she would have strolled right into the door if it hadn't of been opened by the door guard. Like clockwork, Miss Musumeno always arrived home after a thirty minute visit to the library.
"I take it the library received a new shipment today, Sora-san?" he grinned as he closed the door.
"Hai, Tohiru-san," she nodded enthusiastically, her eyes still reading the pages. "Arigatou."
Though knowing that it wouldn't be seen, he waved his hand, chuckling heartily, and returned to his office. He hoped she would remember the other doors lying between the lobby and her apartment.

After Sora settled in her two bedroom apartment and finished grading her students' quizzes, her thoughts turned to the visions she saw after patting Miaka. She'd had premonitions before, usually minor events like calls just minutes before the phone would ring and the work lottery pool. She rarely ever played them, mainly because she knew if she did, her visions would disappear.
Though, what puzzled her the most was her visions usually foretold events. The images from Miaka gave her the feeling of something that had already happened. If so, what did they mean? She thought about just asking the girl, however, she did not want to pry where she should not.
Convincing herself that the vision was a result of stress, she decided to flip through another one of her library books. She retreated to her study, grabbing ten out of the stack of thirty books, most of which came from the "Reference Room." Being a teacher definitely had its perks!
Sora placed the books in the small bookshelf on the desk, unable to pick which one to begin reading. Closing her eyes, she ran her finger along the spines. Stopping on the fourth book from the left, she read the title, then wrinkled her nose in distaste at the Roman book. She wasn't in the mood for Greek knock-offs.
Browsing the other spines, she chose the Chinese one, GoJinTenChiJiSho. It was kind of familiar to her. Though she had never read the ShiJinTenChiSho, she had heard of it and how that book had been banned from most libraries due to an urban legend surrounding the author. She didn't believe a word of it, of course. She was an expert on myths and that story was most definitely a myth.
It was obvious that this book was either a fake or a sequel. Although, she could have sworn there was not one. It's probably just some hack wanting to make money off the fame of the first, she surmised.
Growing tired of speculating, she sighed happily. She had it in her hands, now, and that's all that matter. Grabbing a soda from her mini-refrigerator, she trotted over to the American-style futon occupying the center of the room to start on her book.

Meanwhile, Miaka and Yui, both agreeing the need to discuss this new book with their Seishi, left the library. What they couldn't decide on was whether they should follow their teacher or leave her. Miaka, wanting to follow her, felt it was her duty as a former miko to make sure nothing bad happened.
"I think we should follow Sensei," Miaka murmured as they followed their teacher out of the library.
"But what if we get taken into the book? We should contact the Seishi first," Yui argued. However, after seeing the determined look on her friend's face, she sighed. "Fine. We'll follow her. But, you're calling Taka as soon as we get there."
"Hai, hai."

"Otou-sama?" Genbu glanced sideways as he watched the fountain's glassy surface. When the wolf-god grunted in affirmation, he turned to his siblings and nodded to them.
Each deity took their place in front of their designated area, and clasped their hands, palm to palm, in front of their chests. A soft chant soon filled the air. As the chant grew louder, a glow, of each's respective colors, erupted from their foreheads, then encompassed their entire forms.
About mid-way through the chant, their father's deep voice joined them. He and his symbol, too, began to glow, though gray in color. The five auras flew straight up in the sky, then nose-dived into the fountain. It shattered, chunks of cement flying into the invisible barriers separating the gods. Ignoring the debris flying at them, all five gods collapsed in exhaustion.
"It's all we can do for now, my Miko," the wolf-god murmured and bowed his head. "I just hope it's enough."

As Sora pulled the black and white tiger-striped throw blanket around her and set the book in her lap, the phone rang. She climbed off the futon and walked to the desk, cursing her inability to predict the phone this time. However, when she touched the phone, she knew instantly who it was that called.
"Moshi, moshi," she mumbled, her irritation evident. "Yuuki-san."
"Sensei," her voice filled with relief, then confusion. "This is.. sensei? How'd you know it was me?"
"Nevermind. What is it that you want?"
"Sensei, you must not read the..." the receiver crackled, blocking out her words. Then her voice returned. "...ease do not read that book."
A bright multi-colored light exploded around the book sitting on the futon, at the same time the sound died. As if a strong gale blew in the room, the pages of the GoJinTenChiJiSho flipped rapidly. Then everything went still.
"Nani?" Sora, oblivious to the oddity happening behind her, shouted into the phone. "Yuuki-san? Yuuki-san?" A dial tone was her only answer.
"Strange," she shrugged and retreated to the couch-bed. "Maybe she'll call back."
|
"I got cut off," Miaka hung up the phone, then clutched the booth as if in pain. "Yui-chan, did you feel that? That was the power of Suzaku!"
"Hai. I felt it, also, as well as Seiryuu. I'm going to the phone across the street and call Hertz. You call Taka. We need to get our Seishi here pronto!" Looking both ways, she crossed the deserted street.
After watching Yui for a moment, she removed the receiver from its base and dialed her fiance's number. "Taka, it's Miaka. Hai, I'm all right. You felt it, too?"
"Yeah. Thank kami you're okay! I thought something happened to you," his voice fell at the thought, then returned to normal. "If it wasn't you, then whose power did that belong to?"
"It was Suzaku's and Seiryuu's. Yui felt the flash, too. There's something I've got to tell you," she bit her lip worriedly. She hesitated, not wanting to because she knew he'd just worry more. But, she spit it out anyway. "The ShiJinTenChiSho has returned."
"Nani?!"
"Hai. Only it's changed," she continued, describing her run-in with Sora and following her home.
"Mi-a-ka," she winced at the threatening tone his voice broadcasted. "Why didn't you call me first thing? You might have gotten sucked back into book and I would have never known."
"Gomen ne, Taka-kun. I wasn't thinking. I was only worried about Musumeno-sensei."

Since the phone never rang again, Sora leaned back and sighed. Suddenly, a rumbling sound echoed throughout the room. Giggling, she headed out the right door leading to the kitchen. So wrapped up in her books, she had forgotten to eat when she came home! Grabbing some sliced roast beef and two pieces of bread, she made her sandwich.
She returned to her study. Plopping back on the futon with the sandwich hanging lop-sided out of her mouth, she reached to snatch the book into her lap.
However, when her hand touch its rough surface, images of the four mikos'- Oukuda Takiko, Ousugi Suzuno, Miaka, and Yui- journeys flooded her mind. She grabbed her head and concentrated, trying to force premonition to stop. It did.
Mentally exhausted, Sora sighed again wearily. At first, she thought her foretelling ability was the neatest thing, but now, she was growing tired of the random visions. It still bothered her that the latest visions were not of the future, but of previous events.
Deciding not to touch the book for a while, she pulled the blanket around her and drifted off to sleep.
|
Sora woke up about an hour later. Feeling refreshed, she decided it was time to read that book, visions or no visions. Snatching it from the black and white rug at her feet, she glared at the annoying thing, hoping it'd mess with her again. She was ready for it. But, nothing happened. Five minutes later, she opened the book and began reading its pages.
With four Mikos summoned and gone, peace once again returned the four lands. However, evil lurked, waiting to spring out into the open when given the chance. And to fight this danger, came the Tenkyoku no Miko, priestess to the father of the Four Gods...
Then, out of the blue, there was an insistent knock at her door. Without pausing, she walked over to the door and opened it. Looking up, her eyes opened wide in surprise.
"Yuuki-san! What..." Before she could finish her sentence, a gray light enveloped her entire body and she disappeared. The book fell to the floor with an eerie thump.
|
Whatever was happening to her felt very odd. It was almost like falling, but there was no rushing of wind, just a feeling of weightlessness. However, she was moving at a high rate of speed. Lights and flickers of sounds clouded her senses.
Then, suddenly, it just stopped.
