My thoughts:
I'm not really into RPG/Strat games, but I really like this one!
The story itself is pretty sweet. You see, the main character, Laharl, is the Prince of
...get this... Hell and your father, the king, was killed two years ago. The catch is you've
been asleep the whole two years and now, you've got to defend your claim of the throne.
Then, there's the Dark Assembly. Any changes, like more expensive equipment or creating
'Genius' characters, have to be okayed by the Dark Assembly, which consists of very high level
monsters. They either approve (Yay!) or deny (Nay!) what you bring before them. If
you're denied, you can either bribe the members with items or... persuade them with force,
i.e. fight them. I wouldn't do that until you were level 50 or so.
And that reminds me, the max. level isn't 99 like most RPGs, nor 255, like others,
but, I believe, it's 9,999! I wouldn't have guessed it either. Most of Laharl's vassal in his
castle are somewhere between levels 150 and 500. So, that ruled out the 99/255 rule.
So, after watching my fianc play the game a while, I asked him what he thought
was the max. level. He couldn't speculate either, so I got game booklet from him, hoping it
might tell. Well, I noticed the screen cap of Laharl' stats in the book, it said that he was
over level 2,000! Damn, that's a lot of game play...
There's are so many things to do, besides follow the story, that is. I love the fact that
there are over 150 job classes, including monster classes! So, far my fave class is the
female Mages: Red (fire), Green (wind), Blue (ice), Star (space), and Galaxy. I haven't
gotten Galaxy Mage yet, so I have know idea what her spells entail.
My second fave would have to be the Ronin/Ninja classes; ronin is the female while
ninja is the male. They are bad ass! Especially if you Transmigrate. Transmigration is where
you can take, say your Red Mage and change her into a Galaxy Mage. Depending on the
intelligence you choose for your character, that is how much of her Red Mage abilities that
carry over. Not only that, but the more you transmigrate the higher your starting scores will
be!
And now, for the greatest class in the whole game... Prinnies! Yes, Prinnies. They're
actually penguins. And they are the shit! They wear brown leather belt-bags, which hold
their weapons. The basic Prinny weapon is a knife. When you set them to attack, both
flippers reach into their pouch, pull out two knives- sometimes it's a bowie or a butcher knife-
and just lay into the monster. They also have a special attack where they leap into the air
and throw multiple knives at an enemy across the screen. It's so great!
Their greatest attack, however, isn't an attack at all. You throw them. You take one
of your human characters- only humans can lift and throw- and pick up a Prinny, then
throw. The poor Prinny, then explodes! And they have a hellacious blast zone! It usually
blasts about a quarter to half the map.
I really suggest you buy this game. If not, at least, rent it and see if you like it. It's
got a good, hilarious story, great game play, and, best of all, it's in 16-bit SNES Sprites,
which is always a high-point in my book!
