Prologue: Fate's Gifts
365 D. R.
Near a cottage outside the Kokiri Forest...
A figure covered in a tattered navy blue cloak looked up at the heavens as an approaching storm rolled in the distant. Shuddering slightly, the figure continued onward, then stopped, seeing a small shack just inside the forest. Carefully stepping around fallen tree limbs and bushes, the figure approached the shack and hesitated before the door.
Inside, sounds of a tune very familiar to the figure floated out of the slightly open window. Peeking around the frame to look in, the shadows of a girl, around the age of five, danced against the wall as the wind flickered the burning candles. Suddenly, the figure fell against the door, a coughing spasm wracking the figure's slim body. Hearing the sound, the girl opened the door and gasped.
"Oh, my. You need help," the girl's innocent blue eyes filled with worry as she lead the figure to a cot across the small room. "You rest here while I go get Tousan."
"No, no. I'm alright," the figure coughed just before pulling down the hood of her cloak, her faded red hair flowing from her ponytail. Looking at the girl curiously, a realization flashed across her eyes. "Your daddy wouldn't happen to be named Link would he?"
The girl laughed as she helped the aged woman down on the cot. "No, that my Ojisan. Tousan's name is Falon."
"I see." Reaching into her left-hand pocket, she pulled out a small gold coin. "Do me a favor would you?" she looked up. "Give this to your Ojisan the next time you see him. It's really important that he gets this."
As the girl streched to retrieve the coin, an aura of orange engulfed the woman. Both stared in wonder as the orange shifted into the coin, then transfered into the girl as she touched it. When she released the coin, the light left the girl and shot through the roof and into the gloomy sky.
"You're the one? My search has ended?" the woman's eyes widened. "Link-kun's not going to be too happy about that."
"What was that light?" the girl questioned as she looked herself over. "What happened?"
"This is a special coin that gives its owner magical powers," the woman stood, grabbed her cloak, and headed for the door. Before exiting, she turned toward the girl. "And it looks like your its chosen one. What's your name?"
"It's Ayana," she stared at the woman. "Where are you going? You can't go out there, not with the horrible storm approaching."
"I'll be fine," she smiled as she closed the door.
"Wait!" Ayana yelled as she jogged out of the shack. "What's your name?"
"Nabooru. Sayonara, Ayana-chan," With that, Nabooru disappeared into the forest.

Meanwhile, at Lon Lon Ranch...
A soft, yet eerie breeze blew across the plains around Lon Lon Ranch. Startled, the horses within it neighed and galloped closer to the stable. A tall, masculine figure slowly emerged from one of the buildings and paused just outside its door. Raising his head as the wind whipped his graying blonde hair, Link closed his eyes and sighed.
"So, trouble starts again after so many years," he murmured, determination appearing in his eyes as he opened them. "Jolan!"
"Tousan?" his second son, Jolan, appeared out of the door behind him. "Is something wrong?"
"Saddle up Elona for me. I'm going to visit Falon."
"Hai!"
After Jolan saddled the horse up, Link sprung on her back. Waving goodbye to Malon, his wife of 45 years, he exited the ranch, in hopes of beating the coming storm.

"It must be done, Falon," Link's angry voice sounded through the door as Lynn slammed it. Ever since her granfather arrived at their cottage and mentioned the Triforce of Courage, her parents ordered her to stay in her room until they finished talking.
Why won't they tell me what's going on? the 13-year-old thought as she stomped about the room. I know it's me they're talking about. I'm not a child anymore! Why can't they discuss this with me. Aargh!! Raising her fist, she punched her mattress. Well, I'm not gonna sit here and act like nothing is going on. Opening the door a crack, she began to listen.
"I will not let my daughter be given that thing!" Falon, the oldest of Link's two sons, looked at him in disgust. "Have you forgotten how much trouble that power caused us when I was younger?"
After Link banished Ganon all those years ago, the last remaining monsters still loyal to their evil master attacked them often. Though Link always killed them, the thought of him getting killed always worried his wife and two sons.
"Of course, I remember! It's not like I'm going to give it to her and let her deal with it alone. I'm going to train her to use it myself," Link's gaze met his son's. "Soon, another danger is going to emerge. Hyrule and the world need someone to defend it. I'm too old to do it and you're not strong enough. If I give Lynn the power of the Triforce of Courage and finish her training, by the time the evil comes, she will be strong and old enough to deal with it."
"I'm sorry, Tousan, but I'm not going to put my daughter in that kind of danger. You'll just have to find someone else," Falon looked down regretfully. "It's too dangerous."
From the doorway, Lynn glared at her father. I can't believe Tousan can just push away something like this. The world is in danger. Suddenly grinning, Lynn closed the door quietly. Opening a window, she climbed out of it and headed to the small stable behind the cottage. She entered and waited.
Twenty minutes later, a dejected Link walked slowly into the stable and began preparing for his journey back home. Hearing a rustling sound from Elona's stall, he drew his Kokiri sword and cautiously stepped toward the stall.
"Ojisan!" Lynn's head popped out above the wall.
"Lynn! Don't ever do that again," Link fussed as he patted his hand on his rapidly rising and falling chest. "I'm too old to be scared like that!"
"Gomen, Ojisan," Lynn grinned sheepishly as a sweatdrop appeared above her head. "I couldn't resist. Anyway, I need to talk to you about the Triforce."
"You listened, didn't you?"
"Uh huh," she nodded as she bounced over the wall. "If I do take the Triforce and continue training, will I really be strong enough to defeat this evil?"
"As far as I can tell, you should be powerful enough. That is if we start now."
Nodding, Lynn told him her decision. "Let's do it."
"But your father..."
"I don't care what Tousan said. Unlike him, I can't sit by and do nothing. I want to do this." Clenching her fists at her side to hold back her anger, she looked at her grandfather. "No, I need to do this. And Hyrule needs me to."
Looking proudly at his granddaughter, he yanked off his right-hand glove, the glove that covered the Triforce symbol. "Give my your right hand." After doing so, a yellow glow engulfed them. After shining brightly for a few seconds, the glow receded into Lynn's right hand, leaving the Triforce of Courage symbol embedded on it. Grinning, she looked at it.
"Arigatou, Ojisan," she suddenly frowned. "How am I gonna hide the symbol from Kaasan and Tousan?"
"Don't worry. It'll disappear if you will it to. Just concentrate really hard on making it disappear and it will."
Closing her eyes, she willed away the symbol with her mind. When she opened her eyes, she laughed triumphantly. "It worked! I did it!"
"What'd I tell you?" he playfully poked her in the stomache. Turning serious again, he added. "You mustn't tell your parents about this until you're older. If they find out, your father will have a cow. And we have plenty of those at the Ranch."
"I wasn't gonna tell them anyway," she murmured as she gazed at her hand, wondering what the future would bring now that she was the holder of the Triforce of Courage.
