Prologue
Ten years ago
New York, New York
USA

Several nurses rushed down the hall as a loud cry echoed over throughout the third floor. Entering the last room, the youngest of the nurses was quickly, but carefully handed a small bundle, the source of the cry heard earlier.

"Take the child to the nursery," ordered the head nurse, her face grim. Turning to the other nurses, she began barking more orders.

Not wanting to be a distraction, the young nurse exited the room and headed to the nursery. Two hours passed and she was returning to the room. Only this time she was bringing the baby with her. When she entered, she was greeted with a bright smile from the mother of the child she was holding.

"It's a boy!" the nurse exclaimed excitedly. She walked to the bed and placed him in his mother's waiting arms. "Have you figured out a name for him?"

"Yes. His name is Jason. Jason Howard," her accented voice constricting as she pronounced his last name. The baby cooed approvingly.

Six years later

"Does he have any known living relatives?" the doctor questioned his nurse as they walked down a deserted hallway of the hospital.

"Yes, sir," the nurse flipped through some of the papers on her clipboard. "One. Her name's Alex Torayuri. She's the boy's aunt."

"I want my kaasan!" the blond boy screamed as they turned into the doctor's office.

"What about the father?"

"Unfortunately, there was no father listed on his birth certificate."

"All right then. Contact Ms. Torayuri and see if she'll take him," the doctor looked at the nurse as she handed the boy a cherry lollipop. "If she doesn't, call Social Services."
