Dearest Readers,

Note 1: Batman is copyrighted to Warner Brothers & several other companies that I can't think of at the moment. Danielle "Dani" Thomas & Sami Waltson are fan characters & copyrighted to me, Lacy Curington.

Note 2: THIS IS AN UNFINISHED FANFIC. I started it, but soon lost interest in it.

And now, on with the story!

Five shadowy figures slink around to the back of the First Nations Bank of Gotham City. The largest of the figures slides an I.D. card through the slot and punches in the code, opening the steel door. The gangsters walk into the bank without a second thought.

The largest man knocks the guard on duty unconscious while another moves over toward the t. v. monitors, deactivating the cameras and security systems.

"Hey, Mac," the smallest thug motions to the bag of explosives hanging on the shoulder of the largest thug. "Bring me the bag of goodies."

"Hang on a minute, Abe. I gotta tie up the cop," he says, binding the officer's hands and legs behind his back.

"C'mon, man," the third, wiry thug exclaims nervously as he darts his gaze around the room. "I wanna get the cash and scram!"

"Have patience, Buck. Don't nobody know we're here, not even the Bat!" the fat thug, Marty, grins confidently, his smile spreading from ear to ear. "And we weren't followed. Right, Lonny?"

"Right. Now open the damn safe. I don't want be late and piss off the boss," the thug watching out the back growls threateningly.

"He's really gonna be pissed when he finds out you're all in prison," a voice calls out as two figures, one masculine, the other feminine, emerge in a doorway.

"Shit! It's the Bat," the five thugs scatter. Mac scrambles toward his automatic and starts firing at the two superheroes. Both separate. Batman, taking the high route using his trusty grappling hook, fires it at the ceiling and soars out of the way. Batgirl, taking the low route, rolls behind a stray metal desk as the thug continues to fire.

Batman swings around and kicks the gun from his hands. Smashing the guy on the back of his head, Batman knocks the guy cold. He swiftly hog ties the crook and turns his attention to Marty.

Batgirl, leaping from behind the desk, tackles Abe before he can reach the detonator of the explosives. They both roll around on the ground, moving closer to the bag. Just as the thug manages to reach the detonator, Batgirl kicks it into the wall, destroying it. She slugs the guy in the face. His jaw breaks with a sickening crack, the pain immediately knocking him unconscious.

Out of the corner of her eye, she sees Lonny and Buck running toward the exit. Grabbing a set of bolos out of her belt, she flings it and Lonny falls face-first toward the cold, hard floor. Grinning broadly, she finishes tying the guy up.

Reaching from around his waist, Marty pulls off his chain-linked belt and wraps one end several times around his right fist. Swinging the chain menacingly, he sneers at Batman. He dashes forward, forcing Batman to duck. He swings it again, striking Batman in the back. Groaning, Batman pulls out a bat-a-rang and throws it toward Marty. Marty drops the chain, clutching his throbbing wrist.

Buck, using the distraction of the bat duo as a fast getaway, bolts through the door, but misses the black-booted foot sticking out and trips.

"Hey, Sami?" Dani Thomas calls out as she walks out the apartment. "Do you think you could come with me tomorrow to check out the Mason house? The realtor gives me the creeps and I don't want to go alone."

"No problem. It's what best friends are for," she smirks. "To save you from the ver-wy scar-wy realtor man!" She waves her hands about, making an atrocious, yet funny face.

"Oh, shut up!" Dani sticks out her tongue. "Later!" She gives her a two-fingered salute and walks out the door.

Turning left, she walks down the deserted street, unaware of a shadow following her. Walking two more blocks, she senses the stalker and quickens her pace to a full run. She scrambles down alley after alley, hoping to lose her pursuer.

"Going somewhere?" Nightwing smirks and grabs him by the scruff of his collar. The scrawny thug promptly faints. Suddenly, a fist appears out of nowhere and knocks Nightwing out into the street. Two more hoodlums, one armed a pair of brass knuckles, the other with a baseball bat, appear out of a bluish-gray van.

The first one swings at him, but he ducks. He dodges several more of the man's swings, then returns with one of his own, hitting him squarely in the jaw. The crook's head rotates forty-five degrees and he collapses.

The other thug, whom Nightwing forgot about, sneaks up behind him with the baseball bat, reared back, ready to swing.

Running blindly out of the alleyway, Dani slams into the thug, knocking the bat out his hands. She steps back, shocked, when the thug growls and tries to hit her. She dodges, flipping backwards and knocking him in the chin with the heel of her boot.

While landing, her right foot twists and she staggers slightly. Nightwing just stares, wondering what just happened. Suddenly, out of nowhere gunfire erupts from an upstairs window.

"Watch out!" Nightwing yells as he dives toward her, hoping to dodge the spray of bullets. Not fast enough, a stray bullet grazes Dani deeply on her left thigh as they go tumbling behind a car. Hitting her head against its bumper, she falls unconscious.

"Are you okay?" he asks as he looks down at her, then notices blood on her leg and forehead. "Shit!"
